SO… the last time I posted about fashion, I had mentioned to you how I uncovered some truths about the fast fashion industry  through a documentary I watched on Netflix that didn’t sit too well with me.

Since then, I have done a little bit more research and learned more about the topic, and have even had some time to think about my next steps.

fall look 1.jpg

I realize that fast fashion has been so intertwined with this blog since it started basically, and the majority of my closet contains items from fast fashion retailers. I am not going to go and throw away all my items from retailers I no longer support. I am going to focus on is what I can control going forward, and that is my attitude towards shopping for new clothes and my wardrobe. I am going to consciously make an effort to think about each piece of clothing I buy and focus on creating a more classic wardrobe. If I can’t picture myself wearing an item more than a few times I will walk away from it. Overconsumption of fashion is a huge part of the fast fashion phenomenon. This new mindset while shopping will force me to buy things I can wear many times and focus on investing in fewer pieces that are better quality.

Wedding Guest Dresses

Hi Friends!

I am sorry I have been a bit MIA on the blog lately. I haven't been posting on here as much as I would like to. The truth is, sometimes life gets in the way. Creating content for you is a lot of fun for me and something I absolutely love to do, and it is still a priority for me.

Part of the reason I have been so MIA is... WEDDING SEASON. Wedding season is in full swing, and while during the spring time I attended and helped plan my fair share of bridal showers and bachelorette parties (which I did share in the lifestyle section of my blog), now it's wedding time. It seems like all of our close family and friends are deciding to get hitched. So in a nutshell, my social calendar has been crazy, giving me less time to blog and update my life on here.

All that being said, I do love wedding season, because I love dolling up and finding cute outfits to wear. I rounded up some of my favourite dresses that are perfect to wear if you are a wedding guest, so please check out some of my picks below:

I am really loving lace, pastels, and one-shoulder silhouettes.

Sears Canada!

Sheena Virmani

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon with some fellow blogger babes hosted by Sears Canada and fashion expert Liv Judd.

Now, I know what you’re thinking…Sears- only my grandma shops there. I went in to the luncheon thinking the exact same thing as you, but I was happily surprised.  We got to take a look at some of their Spring/Summer 17’ Women’s Apparel and Accessories and I was shocked that I actually really liked almost everything they pulled for us. This collection is super stylish and super affordable. I found this adorable jean jacket I am rocking here for thirty dollars – it’s really reasonable.

sears 1.jpg

In addition to the new collection, Sears also launched a new section called “The Cut” which is a section of the store that features designer brands at 30-60% off regular prices.  The Cut launched in stores on April 1 – and I popped into a store just the other day to check it out for myself. It is very comparable to a Winners or Nordstrom Rack type concept.  I was really pleased with the designer collection and the prices.

So to sum things up for you fashionistas, Sears rolled out some really great changes in the last little bit, and it is worth checking out. It’s not just your grandma’s favourite store anymore.

Spring at Dynamite

Sheena Virmani

Spring has sprung, maybe not with the weather, but definitely with my wardrobe. As I am writing this and looking out my window, there is snow falling and it has been all day. Hopefully the weather catches up to my wardrobe soon, because spring at Dynamite is just too cute to wait any longer.

I have been eyeing this pair of high-rise embroidered jeans since early March. I saw them at the store a few times and couldn’t stop thinking about them. That’s how you know it’s meant to be. I went and bought a pair for myself just the other weekend and have already worn them several times. These are going to be a spring staple for me. I like the fit of the jeans, and I also like that the embroidery is subtle, but still gives the jeans a bit of character.

Embroidered jeans aside, I am always a huge fan of Dynamite. Their spring/summer collection is on point this year. I feel like I could buy the entire store. They have some really great floral prints as well as some really great basics to get you ready for the summer. I really like how all their pieces are so versatile; I can easily style them for work in the day, and also to go out at night without a problem.

I also want to give a shout-out to Pretty Lights Photography for collaborating with me on this shoot. I have known Arezoo from a few years ago when we worked at a job together. It was so nice re-connecting with her and being able to work with her on this. She is extremely talented and an absolute pleasure to work with. I always feel nervous when I am working with someone new - being an introvert and all, but Arezoo has amazing energy and made me feel comfortable right away. I was surprised with myself at how quickly I warmed up. She really brings a lot of energy and creativity to her work and it inspired me. If you are ever looking for a photographer in the Calgary area you should definitely reach out to her.

Pre Spring

Sheena Virmani

Culottes are one of my favourite ways to transition my wardrobe to spring. They are the perfect piece to start showing a little bit of skin on those warmer spring days, but are still long enough to keep you covered because lets face it it's not that hot yet (even though we would all like it to be summer already).

I used to think as a petite girl it was impossible for me to pull off culottes and have them look good on my body. I had tried on a few pairs and it just felt like they hung off my body in all the wrong ways- super unflattering.

I'd like to tell you that I was wrong, as a petite girl you can wear culottes, you just have to follow a few simple tricks:

  • Try buying them from the petite section of the store so that the proportions fit you better.
  • The hemline should hit just below the knee on petite girls- keep that in mind as you may need to alter the hemline.
  • Heels are a must - block heels look great with culottes.
  • Balance the volume on top with a tighter fitted blouse.

Fishnets have taken over street style lately, and I can definitely see why. Layering has been a big trend for a long time now, and fishnets are the perfect layering item under some distressed jeans or a dress. It can instantly make an outfit look edgy.

I am a huge fan of incorporating different prints and textures in my outfits to make them more stylish and fishnets are a great way of doing this.

I've linked some of my favorite fishnet pieces below for you to shop!

I always struggle to find stylish date night outfits in the winter. When it's cold I always just want to resort to leggings and a nice top or dress, it can get a little repetitive the third-month into it.

If you are struggling with the same dilemma, not to worry girls, I got you covered for your hot Valentine's date night outfit. Here is the formula:

Cold Shoulder Top x Leather Mini Skirt x Over The Knee Boots = Hot Date Night Look

It's that easy.

And not to mention so stylish.

Hot date or not, this outfit left me feeling effortlessly chic - the look good without trying kind of deal.

Winter Layers

Hi Girlfriends!

Happy Monday!

I have to say I am having the best time making my "Get Ready With Me" videos. If you want to see more of them please let me know so I know it's something that interests you guys and I can continue to make them.  Watch the video for this look here:

Layering has been one of my favourite winter trends. I love mixing and matching pieces from my wardrobe to create brand new looks that I can wear. I am trying to limit my shopping after the holidays so this is a fun way to keep me occupied while I can't shop for brand new looks.

Layering a crop top over a crisp blouse is a really polished look for the office. To keep the layers from looking bulky keep your blouse untucked. This look also works well if your blouse is a little bit longer to balance out the layers.

What's your favourite way to incorporate layers into your winter looks?

A Blushing Holiday

Sheena Virmani

Hello Girlfriends!

There is only two workdays left until Christmas break and I couldn’t be more excited. I just feel brain-dead and in desperate need for some R&R. Christmas-time is always the best because it is one of the few times a year that our whole family is together for a whole week. We catch up, hang out, share meals, and just relax; it really is the best time. I call it therapeutic, because it truly is.

blush 2.jpg

In other news, yes I did chop my hair, and I absolutely love it. I am now rocking a long bob (LOB). I had done this with my hair about two years ago, really liked it, but then started growing my hair back out for the wedding. I was ready to get a haircut right after the wedding, but I am in between hair stylists right now and I was being picky on where to go get it done. I ended up finding a great little boutique salon called Vanity Vault here in Calgary; I had a good experience and would definitely go back.

blush 1.jpg

My obsession with all things blush continues with this dress I picked up at H&M the other day. I think I will wear it to our Christmas family get-together on the 24th. I really like the bell sleeves; it adds the perfect bit of detailing to make the piece unique. I paired it with fishnet stockings to add a little more glam to the look for a holiday party.

Lastly, around this time of the year, I always reflect on how the year went, what I need to work on and what went well for me in all aspects of my life. This year I realized that the one thing I want to practice more in my life is empathy. Sometimes I find myself being judgmental of people at surface level without knowing their situation. When I remind myself to be more sensitive and think deeper into why someone is the way they are or why they did something a certain way it immediately changes my thoughts towards them. It is definitely something I want to work on a lot more in 2017.

Happy Holidays!

The Perfect Holiday Skirt

Sheena Virmani

Hey Girlfriends!

I cannot believe that it is already halfway through December! I feel like the year has just flown by. We have been super busy with life and just had a chance to put up our tree over the weekend. We also attended a holiday party where I wore this beautiful pleated midi-skirt pictured below. It was a casual get together so I paired it with a chunky knit sweater for the occasion, but I can definitely see myself wearing this with a dressier top for more of an "evening" look.

If you ask me,  a pleated midi-skirt is a holiday 2016 staple. I have seen a bunch of really nice metallic options on some of my favourite fashion bloggers that would be great for holiday parties. The one I am wearing here has a bit of a metallic finish to it as well, I just absolutely love it!

Pops of Leopard

Sheena Virmani

As many of you know, I work at an office during the day. So, I was recently on an overnight work trip to Edmonton and happened to stop over at my absolute favorite store, Simons. For those of you that have never heard of it, Simons is a department store based out of Montreal, they have one location in West Edmonton Mall right now, and one location opening in downtown Calgary sometime next year. If you have never been, you should definitely check it out (you can shop online too). They have some really great stuff- I mainly like to buy clothes from work here. I found a bunch of cute winter dresses that I can wear to work with leggings (I call this my winter uniform) so I was incredibly happy.

FullSizeRender (20).jpg

This dress was one I was a little iffy about on the hanger, but I brought it to try on anyways. I ended up purchasing it because I love the silhouette of it, it’s loose and flowy, but I find it hangs off my body in all the right places.

FullSizeRender (18).jpg

Because the dress is so simple I could play up the accessories – I paired it with some bold tasseled H&M earrings and a leopard print satchel.

This is going to a staple work look for me this winter.

Bomber Season

Sheena Virmani

Bomber jackets are all the rage this season. They are the perfect layering piece for the fall. Mine has definitely been a weekend staple. I also bought K a similar bomber to the one I am wearing below so we can match (LOL). His is from Zara and mine is from H&M. I have also linked a few of my favourites below for you to shop!

Weekday Wardrobe Hack

Sheena Virmani

If you are like me, you want to be able to snooze as long as you can in the mornings during the work week. Anything that I can do on the weekend to save me time in the mornings, I am all for it. Like a true fashionista, one of my biggest issues in the morning is picking out what I am going to wear to work. If I am not on top of this, it can actually be a huge time waster = less time to keep pressing snooze.

A huge part of the problem is that I have SOOO many clothes, so even if I have an idea in my head what I want to wear the next morning, finding particular clothing items can be challenging- especially when I am pressed for time.  Now especially that K and I share a closet, even though he gets like 10% of the space, it just adds to my closet issues and I realized I needed to do something to stay organized.

The other day, when K and I were at IKEA getting a few things for our house, I happened to come across a clothing rack. I decided to invest in one to solve my weekday wardrobe issues. Over the weekend, I went in my closet and pulled pieces that I wanted to wear during the week and hung them on the rack.  I kept them all in the same colour scheme (grey, black, white, and pink – my favourite colour palette right now and so nice for the summer to fall transition).  When I wake up in the morning I have 10 pieces of clothing to mix and match to create my outfit for the day. Trust me it is A LOT easier than tackling a whole closet full of clothing to find something to wear.  It’s worked really well for me this week, and I think I will continue to do it.

Clothing racks can also be particularly helpful if you want to pull looks for a season or pick out your favourite items to wear for the month.  Sometimes there are pieces in my closet I forget I own because they aren’t always visible to me in my closet. I can see myself using it to hang some of my current favourites as a reminder to incorporate into my outfits when getting ready for the day. The easier it is to see items, the more likely you are to wear it!

Basic B

Sheena Virmani

I’ve been feeling a little run-down lately, with the wedding date just around the corner, busy work days, and a jam packed personal calendar, there is a lot going on and I feel pressed for time all the time.  With that being said, nothing makes me feel more relaxed then some care-free family time. It was so nice spending last weekend with my family, I forgot about all the hustle bustle in my life and felt completely refreshed for the weeks ahead.  I feel grateful for the having such an amazing group of people in my life who are constant sources of positive energy.

For my family-fun filled weekend I kept it basic but still trendy by pairing light denim skinny jeans with an off-the-shoulder body suit and rose gold block heels… all from H&M!  This look is so simple, but I felt so put together, sometimes less is more.

Bombshell Bodysuits

Sheena Virmani

It’s finally Fri-YAY, and I don’t know how the weather is where you are, but where I live it’s gorgeous out (which doesn’t happen very often). I am super excited that the weather is going to be fantastic this weekend, which will give me an opportunity to soak up some much needed Vitamin D and get in some good outdoorsy time (this means lounging on a patio).

I’ve decided to put together a list of my favourite bodysuits for the summer, because let’s face it … they are going to be a summertime staple. If there is one piece you want to invest in this summer it is definitely the bodysuit. They are such a versatile layering piece, whether under a pair of culottes, a pencil skirt, or light summer trousers – it’s definitely going to elevate your look this season!

The DL on Denim on Denim

Sheena Virmani

I always thought that denim on denim was a totally taboo subject, kind of like socks and sandals. I think the fashion world has really changed its opinion on this, as lately I’m noticing it has become more accepted. I decided to give it a try over the weekend, and I feel it makes for some chic casual wear.

Now, the rule book for styling denim on denim states you should always contrast washes when going for this look. I might disagree here a little bit, because below I am wearing a top and bottoms that are similar washes and this look works for me. I think it really depends on the pieces you are styling to ensure the look works. You want to make sure you have two pieces that fit you perfectly- baggy jeans and a baggy top is not a good look on anyone. When I do style this type of look, I am always trying to give off a super casual vibe so I really like to incorporate distressed denim if it works. Lastly, I always keep looks like this really simple on the accessories and shoes so it doesn’t look overly styled…chill vibes only (you feel me?).

What are your thoughts on the subject? I would love to know in the comments below!

Floral Palazzo

Sheena Virmani

The other night I had the pleasure of attending the Dynamite store opening party at Market Mall here in Calgary. The new store looks super trendy and modern in comparison to other locations I have been to in the city, I was definitely impressed. I am crazy about their Summer 2016 collection- lots of floral and soft colors. Seriously, I felt like I could’ve bought the whole store!

This dark floral print of the palazzo pants I am wearing below was one of my favorite prints in the store.  I paired it with a blush body suit. They had quite a few body suits in the store which are on trend right now and go really well with light summer trousers or skirts – I definitely recommend them.
